Contract MTO2015-5121: Highway 66 at Virginatown.
The purpose of this project was to provide a new alignment for Highway 66 north of North Virginiatown to avoid the risk of surface failures within the existing highway structure. The risk of failures was due to stability problems related to the abandoned Kerr Chesterville mine adjacent to the highway right of way. The project was located within the Township of McGarry just 3.8 km west of the Ontario-Quebec border.
The existing Highway 66 was permanently closed to public traffic and graded out east of Kerr Mine Road. This section of roadway will remain accessible to municipality and utility maintenance vehicles only.
